Monrovia, Liberia- The Chinese government has strongly criticized the United States’ persistent use of tariffs, labeling it an “abuse” and arguing that it destabilizes the global economy and undermines international trade rules. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce issued a statement today, expressing Beijing’s firm opposition to the continued imposition of tariffs by Washington, particularly in light of ongoing global economic challenges.

The statement, shared by various Chinese Embassies in West Africa including Liberia, highlighted the detrimental effects of unilaterally imposed tariffs, claiming they disrupt global supply chains, increase costs for both consumers and businesses, and ultimately hinder global economic recovery.

“The repeated use of tariffs by the U.S. is a clear violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) principles and a blatant disregard for the established international trade order,” the spokesperson stated. “These actions are not conducive to resolving trade imbalances and instead create uncertainty and friction within the global economic landscape.”

While the specific tariffs cited in the statement were not explicitly named, it is understood that the criticism targets the legacy tariffs implemented during the previous U.S. administration on a range of Chinese goods, as well as potential future tariffs being considered.

The Chinese government reiterated its commitment to multilateralism and called for a return to dialogue and cooperation to address trade issues. They emphasized the importance of resolving disputes through consultation and negotiation within the framework of the WTO, rather than resorting to unilateral measures.

“We urge the U.S. to abandon its protectionist practices and work with other countries to promote a fair, open, and non-discriminatory trade environment,” the statement continued. “China stands ready to engage in constructive dialogue to address legitimate concerns and foster mutually beneficial trade relations, but we will also firmly defend our own legitimate rights and interests.”

The statement comes amidst ongoing discussions between the two economic powerhouses regarding trade issues and economic cooperation. While some progress has been reported in recent months, significant differences remain, particularly regarding tariffs, intellectual property rights, and market access.

Analysts believe that the Chinese government’s strong condemnation reflects growing frustration with the continued U.S. tariff policy and signals a determination to safeguard its economic interests on the global stage. The long-term impact of these tensions on the global economy remains to be seen, but experts warn that continued trade friction between the two largest economies in the world could further dampen global growth prospects. The situation is likely to remain a key point of contention in future dialogues between Beijing and Washington.

Full Text of the Chinese Government’s Position on Opposing U.S. Abuse of Tariffs is Below

As the second largest economy and second largest market for consumer goods, China is committed to opening ever wider to the world, no matter how the international situation changes. We will continue to advance high standard opening up. We will steadily expand institutional opening up in rules, regulations, management, and standards. We will implement high-standard policies for trade and investment liberalization and facilitation. We will foster a first-class market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized business environment. And we will share our development opportunities with the world to achieve mutual benefits.

Development is an inalienable right of all countries, not the exclusive privilege of a few. International affairs should be addressed through consultation, and the future of the world should be decided by all countries. There are no winners in trade or tariff wars. Protectionism is a dead end. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefit. They should practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and defend the U.N.-centered international system and the WTO-centered multilateral trading system. We are confident that the vast majority of countries, committed to fairness and justice, will stand on the right side of history and act in their best interests. The world must embrace fairness and reject hegemonism!
