In the wake of the gumshoe of incendiary statements made about Canada by US President Donald Trump, King Charles of the United Kingdom has met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address key issues.

President Trump has recurrently talked about making Canada the 51st of the United States and has also declared to impose new import taxes on Canada, which is one of his top trading partners.

The outgoing Prime Minister Trudeau said he would discuss issues of importance to Canadians, including “standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation”. He made the remark prior to his meeting with the King at Sandringham.

In an effort to reduce tension, King Charles has also extended an invitation to Trump to visit him in what will be an unprecedented second state visit.

As head of state of the Commonwealth nation which include Canada, the King has faced calls to give Canada his vocal backing in the face of Trump’s statements.

A number of lobal affairs analysts including a former leader of the Canadian province of Alberta believe King Charles faces a difficult tightrope to walk,

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Jason Kenney said the King could only act on the advice of the Canadian PM, who “should ask [Charles] to underscore Canadian sovereignty”.

Sources in Washington, Dc say the new import taxes revealed by President Trump are also set to come into effect on Tuesday, specifically targeting goods arriving from China, Canada and Mexico.
