Addis Ababa– Ethiopia officially began its three-year membership on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) on April 1, 2025, marking the occasion with a flag ceremony at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa. The event signifies Ethiopia’s commitment to actively contribute to the continent’s peace and security efforts.

The welcoming ceremony was attended by key AU officials, including Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Chairperson of the PSC for the Month of April, who expressed strong confidence in the newly elected members’ abilities to enhance peace and security across Africa. Ambassador Otengo highlighted the importance of collaboration and experience in addressing the complex challenges facing the continent.

Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, echoed this sentiment, commending both the newly elected and re-elected members. He emphasized the crucial role the AUPSC plays in conflict prevention and management, expressing optimism that the addition of new members would further strengthen the Council’s capacity in this area.

Representing Ethiopia at the ceremony was Ambassador Hirut Zemene, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the AU and UNECA. Ambassador Zemene reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to working closely with fellow PSC members to promote peace and stability throughout Africa.

Ethiopia’s election to the AUPSC, along with Eswatini, was confirmed during the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council held on February 12, 2025. Nigeria and Cameroon were also re-elected for another term, representing their respective regions.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia intends to leverage its extensive experience in conflict resolution, peace-making, and peace-building at regional, continental, and global levels during its tenure on the AUPSC. The country is committed to actively contributing to the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts across the African continent.
