Addis Ababa – The African Union Commission (AUC) has highlighted the critical importance of its partnership with the European Union in achieving Africa’s ambitious developmental agenda. Speaking at a Europe Day celebration attended by members of the diplomatic corps, AUC Deputy Chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi emphasized the long-standing and evolving nature of the relationship.

Haddadi underscored that as Africa strides towards its Agenda 2063 goals, the African Union places significant value on partners who acknowledge and support the continent’s self-defined priorities and development trajectory.

“For 25 years, the AU and the EU have stood together in addressing global challenges, fostering economic growth, and promoting stability across our continents,” Haddadi stated. “This partnership has evolved into a model of intercontinental cooperation, demonstrating what can be accomplished when Africa and Europe work together.”

In the face of increasing geopolitical uncertainties and threats to multilateralism, the Deputy Chairperson stressed that strengthened cooperation between Africa and Europe is more vital than ever. She emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to navigate these challenges and ensure a stable and prosperous future for both continents.

Reflecting on the key outcomes of the recent AU-EU Summit, Haddadi highlighted four priority areas that will guide future collaboration: building a prosperous and sustainable Africa and Europe, renewing commitment to peace and security, enhancing partnership on migration and mobility, and reaffirming a firm commitment to multilateralism.

These priority areas reflect a shared vision for a future where both continents benefit from strengthened economic ties, enhanced peace and security cooperation, responsible migration management, and a commitment to upholding international norms and institutions.

Haddadi concluded her remarks with a call for concrete action. She urged all stakeholders to translate these shared priorities into tangible progress that will benefit both Africa and Europe. The AUC’s statement reinforces its commitment to working closely with the EU to advance Africa’s interests and achieve its developmental aspirations through a robust and mutually beneficial partnership.
