Conakry, Guinea – The African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has completed a field mission to Guinea from May 30 to 31, 2025, with the participation of Ethiopia. The mission aims to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, with a particular focus on supporting the sisterly nation of Guinea during its political transition.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit provides an opportunity for the AUPSC to engage directly with Guinean authorities, assess the current status of the transition toward constitutional order, and explore ways to enhance coordination of peacebuilding initiatives at both regional and continental levels.

During the consultations with Guinean officials, AUPSC member states expressed appreciation for the Guinean authorities’ openness and commitment to dialogue. They acknowledged the recent positive political developments and encouraged continued cooperation with the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ensure a smooth and inclusive transition.

Ethiopia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Ambassador Nebiyu Tedla, represented Ethiopia in the AUPSC mission.

The mission’s objective is to support Guinea’s efforts to restore peace and stability, promote national reconciliation, and create an enabling environment for the successful completion of the political transition. The AUPSC members also aim to identify potential challenges and opportunities for regional and continental engagement in Guinea’s peacebuilding process.

The AUPSC’s field mission to Guinea comes at a critical time in the country’s political transition. In September 2024, Guinea’s military seized power in a coup, ousting President Alpha Condé. The military junta, led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, promised to restore constitutional order and hold democratic elections. However, the international community has expressed concerns about the military’s commitment to the transition process.

The African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the United Nations have called for a swift and peaceful transition to democratic rule in Guinea. The AUPSC’s field mission is part of the international community’s efforts to support Guinea’s transition and ensure a smooth and inclusive political process.

Ethiopia’s participation in the AUPSC mission reflects its commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in Africa. Ethiopia has been an active member of the African Union and has contributed troops to various peacekeeping missions on the continent. Ethiopia’s participation in the AUPSC mission also highlights its commitment to supporting its fellow African countries in their efforts to restore peace and stability.

In conclusion, the AUPSC’s field mission to Guinea is a crucial step in supporting the country’s political transition and promoting peace, security, and stability in the region. Ethiopia’s participation in the mission underscores its commitment to these goals and its dedication to working with its African partners to achieve them.
