Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto officially inaugurated a modern 210-unit police housing complex in Nairobi’s Industrial Area on Tuesday, June 3rd, hailing it as a “watershed moment” in his administration’s commitment to restoring the dignity of Kenya’s security forces. The complex, entirely funded by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), is specifically designated for police officers serving at the bank.

The project, a testament to a strategic partnership between the CBK and the National Police Service (NPS), features a mix of 200 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom apartments, offering a significant upgrade from the often-substandard housing conditions faced by many officers. Beyond providing comfortable living spaces, the complex boasts amenities such as a daycare centre and a fully equipped gymnasium, promoting the well-being of the officers and their families.

The collaboration between the CBK and the NPS began with a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2020. Under the agreement, the CBK leased 4.1 acres of land from the police for a period of 60 years to facilitate the construction of the housing complex. In return, the bank financed the construction of the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong’, which President Ruto himself inaugurated in 2022.

Beyond its functional purpose, the housing complex embodies a commitment to sustainability. Equipped with solar energy systems, water treatment facilities, and lush landscaping featuring over 200 trees, the design prioritizes environmental responsibility. The project also prioritized local economic development, utilizing locally sourced materials, including natural stone and handcrafted furniture. Construction of the complex generated over 500 daily jobs and employed more than 1,000 Kenyans over the course of two years.

During the inauguration, President Ruto announced a landmark policy decision, ensuring that 20% of the homes in the government’s Affordable Housing Programme will be allocated to personnel within the disciplined services. This move underscores the government’s dedication to providing adequate and affordable housing for those serving in the security forces, solidifying their commitment to a grateful nation.
