Accra, Ghana – June 6, 2024 – President John Dramani Mahama has called on young people in Ghana’s Zongos and inner cities to seize opportunities offered by the government’s new initiatives, particularly the National Apprenticeship Programme, to acquire skills for the modern workforce.

Speaking at the national Eid al-Adha prayers held at Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama also encouraged Ghanaian youth to take advantage of the “Adwumawurah Programme,” which provides individuals with capital and mentorship to launch their own businesses.

“We will ensure that Zongo communities are no longer neglected. Under our new Zongo Development Framework, we will focus on infrastructure, sanitation, health, sports, and vocational training,” President Mahama stated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing a fair chance at success for every Ghanaian child, regardless of their socio-economic background or place of birth.

The President also announced the impending rollout of multiple programs under the Youth Employment Agency, designed to equip young people with skills for life, promoting independence, leadership, and dignity.

Furthermore, President Mahama informed the public about the establishment of a multi-religious committee tasked with planning the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. He announced that on July 1st, the anniversary of Ghana’s Republic, both Muslim and Christian prayers would be offered to thank God for his continued blessings upon the nation. “Allah says that if He bestows His blessing on us and we thank Him, He will bestow even more blessings on us,” the President stated, expressing optimism that the economy would improve following the event.

Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by many families, including high prices and job scarcity, President Mahama assured citizens that the government is working diligently to turn the situation around. He highlighted the “economic reset agenda,” focused on stabilizing the cedi, cutting wasteful expenditures, creating jobs, and supporting local industries.

“I am happy to report that inflation is slowly declining, the cedi is gaining relative stability, and we are taking concrete steps to restore investor confidence and bring lasting relief to Ghanaian households from the hardship,” he said.

President Mahama emphasized that the youth, especially those from Zongo communities, are crucial to Ghana’s economic growth. He concluded his address by urging citizens to recommit to the values of faith, sacrifice, love, and unity, and to remember the less fortunate during the holy day.
