Washington D.C. – Recent polls are painting a concerning picture for President Trump and the Republican Party, with a noticeable decline in voter support potentially signaling trouble ahead as the party prepares for upcoming elections. The data suggests that Trump’s policies, particularly on the economic front, may be alienating voters and even pushing some towards the Democratic Party.

This shift in sentiment comes at a critical time, with Republicans holding only a slim majority in Congress and the 2026 midterm elections looming large. Sustaining support in Congress is crucial for the administration, and a continued erosion of public trust could jeopardize Republican control of the House.

Newsweek recently highlighted a particularly worrying poll conducted by RMG Research, a public opinion polling firm founded by conservative pollster Scott Rasmussen. The poll, published on April 16th, revealed a significant swing in voter intention towards Democratic congressional candidates.

“Negative polls are early indicators of changing public opinion about Trump and his policies,” Katie Plummer of Newsweek noted. “A sustained backlash to his early actions as president—which included implementing tariffs and imposing a range of executive orders—could persuade him to change course or risk losing support from the electorate.”

The RMG Research poll found that when including voters who leaned Democratic and Republican, 50% of respondents claimed they would vote for the Democrat on their ballot, while only 45% said the same about Republicans. This represents a significant gain for the Democrats.

“Historically, voters have tended to trust Republicans more than Democrats on the economy,” noted Napolitan News Service in a release about its polling. “If voter concerns aren’t addressed, however, Democrats will continue to make gains on the generic ballot.”

The poll results raise questions about the direction the Republican Party will take moving forward and how it will engage with the electorate in the coming months. While Trump remains a prominent figure within the GOP, the data suggests his influence may be waning as dissatisfaction with the party’s trajectory grows.

Whether or not Democratic gains will continue amid concerns regarding Trump’s economic and trade policies remains to be seen. However, the poll findings from Napolitan News Service suggest that a significant shift may be occurring within the American electorate, forcing the Republican Party to reassess its strategy and address growing concerns about its economic policies. The stakes are high as the party works to unify its base and maintain its grip on power in the face of fluctuating public opinion.
