Washington D.C. – In a significant fracture of a once-close alliance, Elon Musk has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s signature legislative agenda, calling it a “massive spending bill” that undermines his own efforts to streamline government spending. The billionaire entrepreneur’s remarks come as he steps back from his formal role advising the administration and reduces his political contributions.
Musk, who heavily supported Trump’s presidential campaign with at least $250 million and subsequently served as a senior advisor, expressed his “disappointment” with the President’s centerpiece legislation. The bill, which combines tax cuts with enhanced immigration enforcement, was described by Musk in a CBS interview Tuesday night as increasing the federal deficit and negating the work of his Department of Government Efficiency, humorously nicknamed “Doge.”
“I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful,” Musk stated bluntly, “But I don’t know if it could be both.”
White House officials have yet to comment on Musk’s criticisms. The Republican-backed legislation is currently under debate in the Senate, having already passed through the House.
Musk’s public break with the President coincides with his shift in focus back to his private enterprises, including electric car manufacturer Tesla and space exploration company SpaceX. He has also indicated a reduction in his political spending, stating, “I think I’ve done enough.”
The tech mogul’s experience working within the government appears to have tempered his initial enthusiasm. Despite hopes that his “Doge” department would generate $1 trillion in spending cuts, he has fallen significantly short of that ambitious goal.
“The federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than I realized,” Musk told The Washington Post. “I thought there were problems, but it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things in DC, to say the least.”
Previously, Musk had been a vocal champion of Trump, even declaring “The more I’ve gotten to know President Trump, the more I like the guy. Frankly, I love him.” Trump reciprocated the admiration, calling Musk “a truly great American” and even showcasing Tesla vehicles on the White House driveway during a period of declining sales.
The impact of Musk’s criticism on the legislative debate remains uncertain. While he wielded influence during the transition period, successfully rallying opposition against a spending measure, Trump remains a dominant force within the Republican Party. Many lawmakers have demonstrated a reluctance to challenge the President’s agenda.
This public disagreement marks a turning point in the relationship between Musk and Trump, raising questions about the future of their political alignment and the potential impact on the administration’s legislative goals.
