NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenyan fintech and broader business community is mourning the loss of Leon Kiptum, a highly respected industry leader and passionate advocate for Africa’s digital transformation, who passed away on the night of Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the age of 44.

Kiptum was widely recognized for his significant contributions to the digital payments landscape across the continent and his leadership in driving innovation.

Until June of this year, Kiptum served as the Senior Vice President for East Africa at Flutterwave, a leading fintech company at the forefront of digital payments innovation. During his two-year tenure, he played a pivotal role in scaling Flutterwave’s regional operations, strengthening crucial partnerships with Central Banks, businesses, and regulators, and significantly deepening access to digital financial services throughout East Africa.

News of his passing prompted an immediate outpouring of tributes, including from his former employer. Flutterwave released a heartfelt statement on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging his profound impact.

“We’re saddened by the passing of our former colleague, Leon Kiptum who was the SVP Business Development in East Africa during his time at Flutterwave,” the company posted. “Leon was a true leader who helped shape our presence in East Africa. He built strong partnerships, grew our enterprise business, and played a key role in connecting payment systems across the region. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched and the foundation he helped build,” the statement continued, underscoring his vital role and enduring influence.

Beyond his corporate achievements, Kiptum was celebrated as a dedicated coach and a passionate voice for technological advancement in Africa, championing initiatives that aimed to bridge the digital divide and empower local economies. His sudden demise leaves a void in the region’s rapidly evolving fintech sector, but his contributions are expected to inspire future generations of innovators and leaders.
