Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has arrested the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Commission, George Yarngo,, on charges of corruption. The arrest, which took place early on March 19, 2025, in Monrovia, follows a months-long investigation into alleged financial improprieties within the WASH Commission.

While the specifics of the charges remain under investigation, LACC officials confirmed that Mr. Yarngo is being accused of offenses related to failure to conform with a prior subpoena regarding grave allegations of financial transgression, embezzlement of funds, abuse of office, including mishandling of a USD 20,000 intended for fuel acquisition, USD 6,000 for generator maintenance, and USD 30,000 for cleaning materials and fumigation services, none of which were done, according to the LACC’s allegation.

“The LACC is committed to upholding transparency and accountability in public service,” stated [Quote LACC Spokesperson. “This arrest sends a clear message that we will not tolerate corruption, regardless of position or influence. We are determined to ensure that public funds are used for the benefit of the Liberian people.”

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the WASH sector, which is crucial for ensuring clean water and sanitation access for all Liberians. The WASH Commission is responsible for coordinating and regulating activities within the water, sanitation, and hygiene sectors, and this scandal could potentially jeopardize ongoing projects and erode public trust.

A cross section of Liberians hailed the arrest on ground that it is deeply concerning. It underscores the urgent need for strengthening oversight and accountability mechanisms within the WASH sector to prevent future occurrences and ensure that the Commission can effectively

Mr. Yarngo is currently in LACC custody and is expected to be formally charged and arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction in the coming days. The LACC has assured the public that the investigation is ongoing and that other individuals may be implicated as the investigation progresses.

This arrest marks a significant step in the LACC’s efforts to combat corruption in Liberia. The LACC is urging anyone with information related to this case or any other potential instances of corruption to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The public will be closely following developments in this case, as it has the potential to impact the effectiveness of the WASH sector and reinforce or undermine the fight against corruption in Liberia.
