Casablanca, Morocco – The ambitious $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project has been reaffirmed as a leading priority for the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim announced the President’s firm commitment during the African Parliament Union’s executive session in Casablanca on Wednesday.

Senator Ibrahim stated that President Tinubu is actively reviewing infrastructure projects that have experienced delays, with the goal of accelerating their completion. He emphasized the multifaceted benefits expected from the pipeline, stating, “This project is expected to create thousands of jobs, boost industrial and digital development, and contribute to a more sustainable energy future for the participating countries.”

The Nigeria-Morocco pipeline, a 5,660 km undertaking traversing 13 African nations, has been gaining significant traction in recent months. Momentum has been boosted by substantial funding support from the United Arab Emirates, joining a consortium of major financiers including the European Investment Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, and the OPEC Fund.

Furthermore, Chinese steel giant Jingye Steel has secured a contract to supply the necessary materials for the pipeline’s construction. The United States has also expressed interest in potentially investing in the project, highlighting its international significance.

Beyond its economic benefits, the pipeline is envisioned to revolutionize the regional energy landscape. It aims to diversify export routes for Nigerian gas, significantly reduce the harmful practice of gas flaring, and provide a more reliable energy source for participating countries.

Morocco has already completed extensive feasibility and engineering studies for the pipeline, paving the way for construction. First gas deliveries are anticipated by 2029. To ensure the smooth implementation of the project, a joint venture between the governments of Rabat and Abuja has been established to oversee its progress.

The development of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline is being hailed as a landmark initiative that will foster economic growth, promote sustainable energy practices, and strengthen ties between participating African nations. President Tinubu’s commitment underscores the importance of this project in Nigeria’s broader development strategy.
