WASHINGTON D.C. – After months of swirling speculation about the state of their marriage, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have officially addressed persistent divorce rumors, confirming their relationship remains strong despite acknowledging “some hard times.”
The candid discussion took place on the “IMO” podcast, co-hosted by Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson, with the episode released on Wednesday, July 16. This marked the first time the power couple has jointly confronted the widespread marital speculation.
Rumors about the Obamas’ marriage have intensified over the past year, fueled by various factors. Speculation grew particularly strong earlier this year following Michelle Obama’s notable absence from certain public events, including what was cited as Donald Trump’s second inauguration and former White House advisor Jared Kushner’s burial – absences that some online interpreted as signs of marital trouble. Further adding to the conjecture were Barack Obama’s vague comments in April about being in a “deep deficit” with his wife, and Michelle’s previous reflections on being an empty nester and embracing independence.
During the podcast, the couple tackled the rumors head-on. The conversation began with a touch of humor, as Craig Robinson cheekily asked his sister and brother-in-law if they even liked each other as they entered the room “all lovey-dovey.” Michelle Obama laughed and referred to the “rumor mill” that had been circulating, with her husband joining in the banter, quipping that “she took him back.”

Moving to a more serious tone, Michelle Obama firmly affirmed that their marriage, which spans over three decades since 1992 and has produced two daughters, Malia and Sasha, is very much intact. “We have had really hard times,” she openly admitted, “but I have never thought about breaking up with him.”
Barack Obama, for his part, revealed he was largely unaware of the extent of the divorce rumors until someone mentioned them to him. Michelle clarified that her recent choices, such as skipping some particular events, were rooted in personal growth and a desire for independence, rather than being indicative of any marital strife.
The Obamas’ appearance on the “IMO” podcast served as more than just a direct rebuttal to gossip; it was a candid celebration of their enduring partnership, resilience, and the unique challenges of maintaining a private life in the public eye. In a world quick to make assumptions, the former first couple reaffirmed that love, laughter, and unwavering loyalty continue to be the cornerstones of their widely admired relationship.
