Kigali, Rwanda – In a significant move to advance artificial intelligence (AI) development on the continent, the Government of Rwanda and the Gates Foundation signed a landmark agreement on Friday, April 4th, establishing the “Rwanda AI Scaling Hub.” The initiative, backed by a $7.5 million commitment from the Gates Foundation over the next three years, aims to accelerate the responsible deployment and scaling of AI technologies across Rwanda and broader Africa.

The agreement was officially signed by Paula Ingabire, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, and Dr. Trevor Mundel, President of Global Health at the Gates Foundation, cementing a shared vision for an African-led AI ecosystem.

“This agreement signals a shared commitment to building an African-led AI ecosystem,” stated the Ministry of ICT and Innovation in a press release. “The Gates Foundation is pledging up to $7.5 million over the next three years to support the scale-up of AI innovation in Rwanda, with conversations ongoing around planning for similar hubs in countries including Senegal, Kenya, and Nigeria.”

The signing took place during the inaugural Global AI Summit on Africa, held in Kigali on April 3-4. The summit, which drew over 1,000 global leaders, tech experts, entrepreneurs, and academics, served as a crucial platform for discussing the potential of AI in addressing Africa’s challenges and fostering innovation.

According to the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, the Rwanda Scaling Hub will act as a central platform to identify, develop, and scale high-impact AI solutions tailored to address critical national challenges. Minister Ingabire emphasized that the AI hub will initially focus on providing solutions in key sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, and education, leveraging the power of AI to improve outcomes and drive progress.

The newly established AI hub will be hosted by the Rwanda Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, leveraging its existing infrastructure and expertise to foster innovation and collaboration in the AI space.

The launch of the Rwanda AI Scaling Hub marks a significant step towards realizing the potential of AI to transform sectors and improve lives across Africa. As President Kagame emphasized at the AI Summit, Africa must not be left behind in the global AI revolution. This partnership between Rwanda and the Gates Foundation demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring the continent is a key player in shaping the future of AI.
