Washington D.C. – The United States has announced it will impose new sanctions on Sudan after concluding that the Sudanese military used chemical weapons during its ongoing civil war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) last year. The announcement, made by State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, marks a significant escalation in international pressure on the Sudanese government.

According to the statement, the sanctions, set to take effect on June 6th, will include restrictions on US exports to Sudan and limitations on the country’s ability to borrow financially. The US government believes these measures will hold the Sudanese military accountable for its alleged use of prohibited weapons and further cripple its ability to wage war against the RSF.

“The United States condemns in the strongest terms the use of chemical weapons in Sudan,” Bruce stated. “This action is a blatant violation of international law and demonstrates a complete disregard for human life. We are committed to holding those responsible for these atrocities accountable.”

The Sudanese government has vehemently denied the accusations. In a statement released shortly after the US announcement, a Sudanese government spokesperson dismissed the allegations as “baseless claims with no supporting evidence.” They accused the US of interfering in Sudan’s internal affairs and reiterated the military’s commitment to upholding international law.

The Sudanese military and the paramilitary RSF have been locked in a brutal conflict since April 2023, vying for control of the country. Both sides have been repeatedly accused of committing war crimes, including targeting civilians and indiscriminately shelling residential areas. These accusations, which both the Sudanese military and the RSF deny, have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and international bodies.

While the US has not released specific details on the alleged chemical weapon attack, the accusation raises serious concerns about the escalation of the conflict and the potential for further atrocities. The imposed sanctions are intended to pressure the Sudanese government to cease hostilities and engage in meaningful negotiations to end the civil war. However, the long-term impact and effectiveness of the sanctions remain to be seen, as the conflict continues to rage and the humanitarian crisis in Sudan deepens.
