A true patriot is one who consistently places the interests of their country above personal gain or external influence!

In all my many years of association with John T. Woods, I cannot recall a single moment when his words or actions reflected personal political ambition that overshadowed the national interest. Had John chosen to manage the Concession Secretariat or the Forestry Development Authority with selfish motives or eagle-eyed greed, he could have easily become a wealthy man—profiting off the backs of the Liberian people.

The late Honorable John T. Woods

But John chose a higher path. Today, he departs this world not with material riches, but with something far more enduring and priceless: the wealth of a good name and an unblemished reputation.

Indeed, a person’s name is their truest identity. It is the lasting story that tells the world who they are—whether for good or ill. John’s life was shaped by an unwavering commitment to service, compassion, principle, and integrity. He lived not for himself, but for the betterment of others and the advancement of the nation he so deeply loved.

I am reminded of a moment a few years ago in Botswana. I was seated at a leadership graduation celebration dinner with about eight young graduates, the oldest figure at the table—a grandfather-like presence among them. As the conversation turned to the topic of principle and integrity in leadership and governance, one of the young leaders posed a thoughtful question: How do we identify the true torchbearers of integrity in a crowd?

To simplify the question, I asked: if you were searching for an unknown person in a crowd, without using colors, signboards, or location markers, how would you find them? The answer was beautifully simple, though it puzzled them at first. You call out the name—and the person attached to that name will step forward.

The name attached to a person is all we truly have to identify who we are, whether good or bad.

John T. Woods has left behind a legacy of a good man, a man of unwavering integrity. For his children and his family, his name is now a golden key—opening countless doors, if and when needed, simply because of the honor and respect it commands.

We remember today:

John T. Woods — the patriot, the nationalist, the man of integrity.

Knowing John was not only a privilege but truly a blessing. May his memory live on and inspire generations to come.
