NAIROBI, Kenya – A leaked document has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political landscape, revealing a proposed leadership lineup for a united opposition ahead of the keenly anticipated 2027 General Election. The confidential arrangement tips Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the anticipated presidential flagbearer, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua slated for a powerful Prime Cabinet Secretary role.

As the 2027 polls draw closer, political tensions are rapidly escalating, with the opposition intensifying its criticism of President William Ruto’s administration. Rallying behind the ‘Wantam’ agenda – a strategic effort to limit Ruto to a single term – the coalition vows to revive the country’s struggling economy. President Ruto, however, remains steadfast in his commitment to securing re-election, reiterating his resolve to fulfill campaign promises and what he describes as a divine mandate from 2022.

According to the document obtained by KTN News, the emerging opposition coalition includes prominent figures such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, People Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, DAP-Kenya Party boss Eugene Wamalwa, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya.

Insiders within the coalition suggest that Kalonzo Musyoka has emerged as the preferred presidential candidate, lauded for his extensive experience in governance and his resolute leadership of the opposition following the formation of a broad-based government.

The choice of a running mate, however, remains under consideration, with Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, and George Natembeya all being floated as potential candidates. The leaked document indicates that Natembeya may be encouraged to seek re-election as Trans Nzoia governor, with a fallback plan of a Cabinet appointment – potentially heading the Interior Ministry – should he lose. If either Matiang’i or Wamalwa is selected as the running mate, the other is reportedly being considered for the crucial role of Senate Speaker.

Rigathi Gachagua, who also leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, is set to retain a highly significant role, specifically the Prime Cabinet Secretary position, across all proposed arrangements. Martha Karua has been proposed as the Speaker of the National Assembly, while Justin Muturi, who briefly served as Attorney General under the current Kenya Kwanza administration, could return to that pivotal legal role.

Political analyst Gitile Naituli offered his perspective on the proposed arrangement, suggesting that such a coalition could succeed if it manages to sidestep internal competition. “If there is such an arrangement, it will deliver because it will avoid a split and would also make sense because Gachagua will remain significant and even higher than the deputy because of his personality,” Naituli stated.

However, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi dismissed the inclusion of leaders who have previously served in past administrations or are currently part of President Ruto’s government, arguing that they cannot genuinely liberate the country from its long-standing economic and political stagnation.

Meanwhile, the dynamic between ODM leader Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka adds another layer of intrigue. In a recent interview, Odinga indicated his openness to supporting either President Ruto or Kalonzo in the next general election, affirming his longstanding friendship and shared views with the Wiper Party leader. He clarified, however, that Kalonzo has not yet formally sought his support for the presidency.

This comes after Kalonzo Musyoka had previously ruled out working with Raila Odinga unless Odinga offered to support his bid for the top seat in 2027. Kalonzo notably supported Odinga’s presidential aspirations in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 General Elections, but now claims Odinga lost his influence and support base upon joining Ruto’s broad-based government.

With all top opposition figures eyeing the presidency, only a solid, cohesive front based on this proposed arrangement can truly actualize the dream of transformative leadership for Kenya.
