Accra, Ghana – Speaking during Eid-al-Adha celebrations, Mr. Yusif Abdulai Korley, Imam of the Kasseh Central Mosque in the Ada East District, has strongly condemned actions by individuals identifying as Muslim that contradict the core principles of Islam. He stated that such actions, particularly those promoting violence and bloodshed, are considered acts against Allah.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Imam Korley emphasized that the Qur’an explicitly forbids actions that lead to the shedding of innocent blood. He described those who engage in such activities as “murderers of the world” and declared that they are enemies of the religion. “These are people who bear Muslim names but live contrary to the values and commandments set by Allah,” he stated. “Islam means peace, and anyone who promotes conflict, riot, or war is an enemy of the religion.”

The Imam stressed that Eid-al-Adha is not merely a time for festivities, but a crucial opportunity for Muslims to deeply reflect on the significance of sacrifice, drawing inspiration from the covenant between Prophet Ibrahim and Allah. He expressed concern that a lack of comprehensive understanding of Islamic principles contributes to these negative actions. He urged Muslims to commit to a deeper understanding of the true meaning of Islam and to earnestly adhere to its teachings.

Adding to the concerns, Mr. Yakubu Sulemana, spokesperson for the Muslim community in Kasseh, voiced apprehension regarding the increasing involvement of Muslim youth in social vices. He highlighted the rise in theft, armed robbery, and substance abuse, particularly the use of opioids, amongst young Muslims.

“These acts are clearly prohibited by the Holy Qur’an, and it is disheartening to see young Muslims indulging in them,” Mr. Sulemana lamented. He further cautioned that Muslims are often under intense scrutiny, likening them to “a white cloth” easily stained by wrongdoing. “When a Muslim commits an offence, it becomes visible to the entire world. But when we do good, it often goes unnoticed,” he noted.

Concluding his statement, Mr. Sulemana issued a call to action, urging Muslim youth across the country to prioritize the study of the Qur’an and Hadith. He emphasized that this deeper understanding is essential to guiding their lives and actions in a manner that is pleasing to Allah. This call for reflection and adherence to Islamic teachings comes at a critical time, urging the Muslim community to address internal challenges and uphold the true values of peace and righteousness.
