New York, NY – June 3, 2025 – Liberia has secured a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026-2027 term, marking a landmark achievement for the nation. Running unopposed, Liberia garnered an overwhelming 181 votes during elections held at the UN Headquarters in New York, easily surpassing the required 128 votes.

The United Nations Security Council is the UN’s principal body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It holds the power to establish peacekeeping operations, enact international sanctions, and authorize military action. With five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, the UNSC plays a crucial role in global affairs.

In a nationally televised address, President Boakai hailed Liberia’s election as a “landmark achievement” and a powerful validation of the country’s remarkable journey from conflict to lasting peace. He emphasized that the 2026-2027 UNSC seat is not merely a diplomatic triumph, but a potent symbol of Liberia’s resilience, its growing global recognition, and Africa’s unwavering dedication to achieving peace and justice on the world stage.

Liberia’s successful bid for the UNSC seat is also being widely attributed to the exceptional leadership of Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti. A former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Nyanti’s deep understanding of international relations and diplomatic intricacies proved invaluable in navigating the complex process leading to the election. Her tenure as Liberia’s Foreign Minister has been marked by a dedication to strengthening Liberia’s international standing and advocating for African interests.

“This victory is a testament to Liberia’s commitment to multilateralism and our unwavering belief in the power of diplomacy,” stated a spokesperson for the Liberian delegation. “We are confident that Liberia will bring a valuable perspective to the Security Council and contribute meaningfully to addressing the pressing challenges facing our world.”

The UNSC, established after World War II, aims to prevent future global conflicts, learning from the failures of the League of Nations. While initially hampered by Cold War tensions, the council has played a vital role in authorizing peacekeeping missions and military interventions across the globe.

With its election to the UNSC, Liberia now has the opportunity to actively participate in these critical discussions and influence decisions that shape international peace and security. This historic moment positions Liberia as a significant voice on the global stage, reflecting the country’s continued progress and its commitment to a more peaceful and just world.
