African Leaders Arrive in Addis Ababa for Crucial UN Food Systems Summit

Kenyan President, arrived in Addis Ababa to Attend UN Food Systems Summit

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Kenyan President William Ruto and Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima have arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit, underscoring the continent’s commitment to addressing global food security challenges.

The dignitaries were welcomed upon their arrival by Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh.

President Ruto’s arrival was confirmed in the early hours of this evening. Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen took to X (formerly Twitter) to express the nation’s welcome, stating, “On behalf of the Government of Ethiopia, I warmly welcome Kenya President William Ruto to Ethiopia, a symbol of African unity, as he joins us for the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit.”

Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen also extended a warm welcome to Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, as he joined other global leaders converging for the crucial summit.

The 2nd UN Food Systems Summit aims to build on the outcomes of the inaugural summit, focusing on accelerating action towards transforming global food systems to be more sustainable, equitable, and resilient. The presence of high-level representatives from two of Africa’s most populous and influential nations highlights the critical importance attached to agricultural transformation and food security within the continent and globally. Their active participation is expected to contribute significantly to the summit’s deliberations and potential solutions for a more secure and sustainable food future.
