MONROVIA, Liberia –Mayor John-Charuk Siafa of the Monrovia City Corporation on Monday, July 28, 2025, hosted a high-level delegation from China’s Jinhua City, holding productive discussions aimed at strengthening strategic economic and trade ties and attracting crucial investments for the Liberian capital.

The Chinese delegation, led by District Governor Mrs. Hu Yuxian, was received by Monrovia City Manager Jones N. Williams and Director of International Affairs and Migration Pekeleh Gbuapaye, who initiated the visit with a comprehensive tour of key city locations, including Chevron Park and the Borough of New Kru Town.

The formal visit to City Hall commenced with an official reception where Mayor Siafa and senior staff welcomed the delegation. A significant gesture of goodwill, Mayor Siafa presented the Key of Monrovia to Governor Yuxian, symbolizing the city’s open embrace.

During a subsequent bilateral engagement session in the Mayor’s Conference Room, Mayor Siafa passionately advocated for potential collaborations and investments to spur Monrovia’s economy. He highlighted critical areas needing attention, including the city’s aging infrastructure, unregulated urban issues, youth unemployment, and persistent environmental challenges like waste management.

“We are grateful for your presence here today; it is our hope that our partnership will help us to address these challenges while looking at the opportunities ahead,” Mayor Siafa stated. “Along these lines, I hope we can collaborate meaningfully and strategically to achieve results in a few areas.” The Mayor further emphasized Liberia’s friendly business climate, citing the country’s free trade zones and favorable investment incentives offered by the National Investment Commission (NIC).

The visit specifically aimed to foster collaboration in economic and trade ties, culture and tourism, new and clean energy, and other strategic areas of mutual interest. Jinhua, a prefecture-level city in central Zhejiang province, boasts a robust economy, historically thriving as an agricultural and forestry processing hub and now a significant industrial center producing machinery, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. It is also globally renowned for products like Jinhua ham.

Mayor Siafa further facilitated an investment dialogue session connecting members of the Liberia Chamber of Commerce with the Chinese delegation, enabling Liberian businesses to explore direct partnership opportunities with Chinese firms.

A significant outcome of the discussions was an official invitation extended by Governor Yuxian for Mayor Siafa and team to visit Jinhua in November of this year, to participate in an upcoming trade and investment summit. In response, Mayor Siafa has already designated a team to work with the Liberia Chamber of Commerce, ensuring Liberian businesses are well-represented at the summit.

For her part, Governor Yuxian expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and assured Mayor Siafa that she would convey the message of Liberia’s investment opportunities back to China. She conveyed optimism that Chinese investors would visit Monrovia to capitalize on the country’s “immense investment potential.”

Both Mayor Siafa and Governor Yuxian and their respective teams concluded their in-depth discussions expressing strong hope for the continued flourishing of cooperation between Monrovia and Jinhua City.
