ADDIS ABABA – Colombia is making a concerted effort to significantly strengthen its economic and commercial relationships with African nations, with a particular focus on Ethiopia, signaling a potential major step forward for intercontinental business ties across Africa. Ambassador Yeisom Arcodia Meneses Copete, Colombia’s envoy to Ethiopia, stated that a high-level business roundtable held yesterday in Addis Ababa marks a pivotal moment in expanding trade and investment between the two countries.

The visit of a substantial Colombian trade delegation, including representatives from diverse sectors and senior government officials, is a cornerstone of a broader “Colombia-Africa strategy.” This initiative aims to foster deeper diplomatic and commercial relations across the continent, with the recent opening of the Colombian Embassy in Addis Ababa serving as a key element of this strategic push.

“The Colombian government is trying to foster the ties with African countries, with a particular focus on Ethiopia,” Ambassador Copete emphasized. He underscored the strategic importance of the business roundtable, which was specifically designed to “facilitate the interactions between the private sector of both countries,” with the ambitious goal of achieving tangible results in a short period.

The Colombian delegation’s high-level composition included two vice ministers and directors from crucial institutions such as the Drug and Food Authority, alongside a robust contingent of business leaders. These meetings are deemed vital for establishing the necessary legal framework to promote and secure bilateral trade and investment.

Colombian business representatives hail from a diverse range of sectors, including agricultural technology, mining, manufacturing, nutrition, and the cultural industry. According to Ambassador Copete, these areas of interest align exceptionally well with Ethiopia’s economic landscape, creating a strong foundation for immediate and long-term collaboration.

The Ambassador underscored Colombia’s commitment to building a more robust and productive economic partnership, stating, “Our purpose with this meeting is trying to grow together and encourage market and trade.” With Ethiopia being Africa’s second most populous nation with approximately 130 million people and boasting one of the region’s fastest-growing economies at an estimated 8.1 percent growth in FY2023/24, this burgeoning partnership not only offers significant opportunities for both nations but also signals a broader trend of enhanced South-South cooperation, representing a major stride for African economic integration and global engagement.
