Nairobi, Kenya – Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has ignited a political firestorm, dropping hints of a potential alliance with former President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of the hotly anticipated 2027 general election. Speaking at Kiambu county on Saturday, March 22, 2025, Muskoka’s pronouncements have fueled speculation about a possible realignment of political forces and a significant challenge to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.

“We must unite to save this country,” Musyoka stated, echoing a sentiment he has expressed repeatedly in recent months. While avoiding explicitly mentioning a 2027 partnership, he lauded Kenyatta’s legacy, praising his efforts in infrastructure development and regional peace initiatives. “President Kenyatta worked tirelessly for this nation. We must remember his contributions and learn from his leadership,” Musyoka added, further fueling the speculation.

The remarks come at a time when both Musyoka and Kenyatta’s Jubilee party are grappling with internal challenges and seeking to redefine their political relevance. Kenyatta, while stepping down as president, remains a significant figure in Kenyan politics, holding sway within the Jubilee party and commanding considerable regional influence.

Musyoka, a seasoned political operator and a former Vice President, has been navigating the turbulent waters of the political landscape since his defeat in the 2022 presidential election where he ran as Raila Odinga’s running mate under the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition. He has consistently criticized the Ruto administration, alleging economic mismanagement and a disregard for the rule of law.

While the full extent of any potential alliance remains unclear, political analysts suggest several factors could be driving this possible reunion. “Both Musyoka and Kenyatta share a common ground in their reservations about the current administration,” explains Dr. Jane Wanjiru, a political science lecturer at the University of Nairobi. “Furthermore, a united front could significantly bolster their negotiating power and provide a formidable platform to challenge Ruto’s dominance in 2027.”

However, obstacles remain. Internal divisions within both Wiper and Jubilee, as well as potential clashes of egos and differing political ambitions, could derail any formal partnership. Furthermore, the public perception of Kenyatta’s legacy and Muskoka’s history of shifting allegiances could also prove to be significant hurdles.

The coming months will be crucial in determining whether this hinted-at alliance will materialize. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Kenyans are watching closely to see how these developments will shape the future of the nation’s political landscape heading into the 2027 general election. This potential alliance signals a significant shift and promises to inject further intrigue into the already complex dynamics of Kenyan politics.
