Nimba County, Liberia – The upcoming Tuesday, April 22, 2025, by-election for the vacant Nimba County Senate seat, following the passing of controversial Senator Prince Johnson, is shaping up to be a crucial test of Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s political influence and a pivotal moment for several prominent Nimba County politicians. The race is attracting a diverse field of candidates, each vying for the opportunity to represent the county in the Senate.

Among the contenders is Edith Gongloe-Weh, a seasoned political figure hailing from Gleayee Zorpea in District #9. As a former Superintendent of Nimba County, Gongloe-Weh brings a wealth of administrative experience to the table and is considered a strong contender.

Another prominent name on the ballot is Samuel Gongben Kogar, the current Representative of Nimba County District #5. Kogar, a veteran politician with over a decade of public service, hopes to leverage his established political network and experience into a Senate seat.

Cllr. Garrison Yealue, a former Representative of Nimba County District #4 and a founding member of the disbanded NUDP, is also throwing his hat into the ring. Yealue’s return to the political arena promises to inject a dynamic element into the election.

The race also features R. Matenckay Tingban, a former Representative of Nimba County District #9, adding another experienced politician to the list. Mack Gbliwon, a former Nimba County Inspector, represents a fresh, albeit familiar, face. While new to electoral politics, Gbliwon is a well-known figure in the Nimba County business community, potentially providing him with a strong base of support.

Adding an element of mystery to the election is Torbor Tee Wonokay Farngalo, a relatively unknown figure in Nimba’s political landscape. Little is known about Farngalo’s background, occupation, or educational qualifications, making his candidacy a subject of both curiosity and skepticism among voters.

Rounding out the field is Dr. George Parkinson Gonpu, a native of Nimba County District #3. Dr. Gonpu is described as a seasoned educator and political leader, suggesting a focus on policy and community development.

The by-election is particularly significant as it could be seen as a referendum on the influence of Vice President Koung. Koung, a prominent figure from Nimba County, is playing a key role in rallying support for his candidate Kogar. The outcome of the election will undoubtedly serve as a barometer of his political capital and his ability to deliver for his constituents.

The upcoming election is expected to be fiercely contested, with each candidate vying to connect with voters and address the key issues facing Nimba County. The results will not only determine who fills the vacant Senate seat but also shape the future political landscape of the county and influence the national political discourse. Voters are urged to carefully consider the candidates and their platforms before heading to the polls.
