Miami, FL – Real Madrid secured their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Juventus on Tuesday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. A second-half header from youngster Gonzalo Garcia proved to be the difference, setting up a mouthwatering clash against Borussia Dortmund.

Xabi Alonso’s Madrid side, unbeaten under his leadership, displayed resilience and tactical maturity to overcome a determined Juventus outfit. The return of Kylian Mbappe from illness as a substitute further boosted the Spanish giants, who are looking to add another trophy to their illustrious cabinet.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois acknowledged the tight contest, stating, “We had a lot of chances in the second half, but their goalkeeper was really good.”

The first half saw a balanced affair, with Juventus initially pressing before Real Madrid gained the upper hand. The breakthrough arrived in the 54th minute when Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a pinpoint cross for Gonzalo Garcia to head home, marking his third goal of the tournament. The introduction of Mbappe late in the game added further threat, though he couldn’t carve out any clear opportunities.

Alonso praised Garcia’s performance and hinted at Mbappe’s readiness for a bigger role in the upcoming quarter-final. “We will keep watching him. I think he will be much better for the quarters,” he said.

The Madrid coach also highlighted his team’s grit. “We had to be patient, we had to mature into the game,” Alonso explained. “With the players and myself, you know you have to grit your teeth and do what you have to do. And in the end, we had to hold on a bit, and I’m happy about that too.”

Juventus manager Igor Tudor attributed his team’s fatigue to the demanding conditions and the strain of a long season. “In the end there were 10 of them asking to be substituted. Obviously you can’t do that but there was an incredible tiredness,” he said, citing the heat, humidity, and tension of the game.

Dortmund Edge Past Monterrey, Book Quarter-Final Spot

Atlanta, GA – In Atlanta, Borussia Dortmund booked their quarter-final berth with a 2-1 victory over Mexican side Monterrey. A brace from Serhou Guirassy proved decisive, though a late push from Monterrey made for a tense finish.

Guirassy struck twice in the first half, with Karim Adeyemi providing the assists for both goals. German Berterame pulled one back for Monterrey, and Sergio Ramos, playing upfront in the dying moments, almost snatched an equaliser with a header that went just wide.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac acknowledged the challenge posed by Real Madrid, who defeated them in the 2024 Champions League final. “Real has a great team, they have many good individual players,” he said. “If we put everything on the pitch, (giving) the same performance as we saw today, I think that we will have a good chance.”

While Dortmund celebrated their victory, they will be without Jobe Bellingham for the quarter-final clash due to suspension, meaning he will miss the chance to play against his brother Jude in the highly anticipated match.

Despite the defeat, Sergio Ramos remained proud of his team’s efforts. “The crowd and our fans and the people who understand about football, they saw that the team gave everything,” he told DAZN.

The stage is now set for a thrilling quarter-final encounter between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, a rematch of the recent Champions League final. Football fans worldwide eagerly await the showdown.
