Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, met with Mr. Rahmon Adebayo, the newly appointed interim Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, in Mogadishu this week. The meeting signals a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in their ongoing fight against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

The high-level discussions centered around enhancing the effectiveness of joint operations and streamlining coordination between Somali security forces and AUSSOM troops. Minister Fiqi reiterated Somalia’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the African Union to dismantle Al-Shabaab and establish lasting peace and stability throughout the region.

“This meeting underscores the importance of a strong partnership between Somalia and the African Union in our shared goal of defeating terrorism,” stated Minister Fiqi. “We are confident that Mr. Adebayo’s leadership and the unwavering support of AUSSOM will be instrumental in achieving this objective.”

Mr. Adebayo, in turn, reaffirmed the African Union’s dedication to assisting Somalia in its efforts to combat extremism and build a secure future. He emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach, highlighting AUSSOM’s commitment to providing security support, training, and capacity building to Somali forces.

The meeting comes at a crucial time as Somalia continues to make progress in its counter-terrorism operations. Strengthening the alliance with the African Union through AUSSOM is seen as vital to sustaining this momentum and ultimately achieving a definitive victory against Al-Shabaab.

The outcome of the meeting has been lauded by analysts who believe that enhanced coordination and collaboration are key to effectively combating the persistent threat posed by the terrorist group and achieving lasting peace and security in Somalia. The commitment from both sides indicates a strong, ongoing partnership focused on a shared goal.
