Abuja, Nigeria – In a dramatic turn of events, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has opposed the release of investigation reports related to his alleged involvement in a drug-related case in the US in the 1990s. The reports, which were ordered to be released by a US District Court on May 2, are part of an ongoing investigation involving several US agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The release of the reports was ordered by Judge Beryl Howell of the US District Court for the District of Columbia, who ruled that withholding the documents from public disclosure was “neither logical nor plausible.” The order was made in response to a freedom of information request filed by an American, Aaron Greenspan, in June 2023 under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Greenspan had filed 12 FOIA requests with six different US government agencies and components seeking information about a joint investigation conducted by the FBI, IRS, DEA, and the US Attorney’s Offices for the Northern District of Indiana and Northern District of Illinois. The investigation allegedly involved President Tinubu and three other individuals, including Abiodun Agbele, who were accused of being associated with a drug ring.

However, in a surprising move, the agencies involved in the investigation have requested a 90-day extension to release the reports, citing unspecified reasons. The Presidency has also weighed in on the matter, stating that the information being sought was not new and did not indict the president.

Lawyers familiar with the case have noted that the order to release the reports is amenable to appeal, which may further delay the release of the documents. The development has sparked intense interest and speculation in Nigeria and beyond, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the matter.

As the saga unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the reports will be released as ordered, or if the agencies and the Presidency will succeed in keeping them under wraps. One thing is certain, however: the outcome of this case will have significant implications for President Tinubu and the people of Nigeria.
