Washington, D.C. – Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced the end of his tenure within President Donald Trump’s administration. Musk, who held a special government employee status as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), confirmed his departure in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, May 29th.

Musk was appointed to lead DOGE by President Trump following his inauguration, tasked with spearheading efforts to cut federal expenditure. During his time, he oversaw workforce reductions and focused on streamlining federal operations, citing wasteful spending within agencies like USAID. The department’s creation was part of the Trump administration’s broader push to reduce federal spending.

“As my scheduled time as a special government employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

However, tensions reportedly arose between Musk and the administration over the President’s comprehensive tax and spending cut package. Musk publicly expressed his reservations, criticizing the bill’s impact on the budget deficit. “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing and increases the budget deficit rather than just decreasing it,” he stated. “I don’t know if it can be both, but I think a bill can be either big or beautiful.”

President Trump dismissed Musk’s concerns on Wednesday, stating he anticipated further revisions during the Senate debates.

Musk’s departure comes as he approaches his mandated 130-day limit as a special federal employee. According to a White House official, the offboarding process began on Wednesday, with Musk completing necessary paperwork. He has reportedly been scaling back his full-time government duties in recent weeks to refocus on his private ventures, SpaceX and Tesla, both of which have faced challenges amidst his involvement with the Trump administration.

Even with Musk’s departure, the DOGE initiative will continue operating, with its employees absorbed into other federal agencies, ensuring its mandate continues.

During his tenure, Musk also made controversial statements regarding USAID, labeling the agency a “criminal organization” after alleging that it used public funds to support bioweapons research, including potential links to the COVID-19 pandemic. These remarks sparked widespread debate globally, drawing both support and criticism. Following a review, the US government reportedly cancelled 83% of USAID programs, leading to job losses in countries like Kenya. President Trump defended the actions, arguing that continued funding under USAID advanced a liberal global agenda.

Musk’s exit marks another significant shift within the Trump administration. While his short stint aimed to bring Silicon Valley efficiency to government operations, disagreements over spending priorities ultimately led to his departure, leaving the future impact of the DOGE initiative yet to be fully realized.
