WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a dramatic escalation of Middle East tensions, the United States has launched a series of airstrikes targeting key Iranian nuclear facilities, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. Former President Donald Trump announced the strikes via his Truth Social account, stating a “full payload of bombs was dropped” and hailing the operation as a “spectacular military success.”

“Congratulations to our great American warriors,” Trump posted, adding, “It is now time for peace.”

Addressing the nation from the White House, Trump declared the Iranian sites “obliterated” and issued a stark warning to Tehran. “Tehran must now make peace (and) if they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier,” he stated. “There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran. Remember, there are many targets left. Tonight was the most difficult of them all by far, and perhaps the most lethal.” He concluded by saying, “If peace doesn’t come quickly we will go to those other targets with precision, speed and skill.”

According to reports, multiple US B-2 stealth bombers, capable of carrying the massive 15,000-kilogram bunker buster bombs, were observed heading west from the US on Saturday. These bombs are believed to be capable of penetrating up to 60 meters underground, offering the best chance of destroying heavily fortified sites like Fordow. However, some reports suggest that parts of the Fordow facility are buried hundreds of meters deep.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded swiftly, declaring that the US actions have escalated the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel to a “full-blown war in the Middle East.” Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had previously warned the US that strikes would “result in irreversible damage for them.”

News of the strikes has ignited a firestorm of reactions both domestically and internationally.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham praised Trump’s decision, saying, “He made the right call. The Tehran regime deserved it. Well done, president. To my fellow citizens: We have the best Air Force in the world. It makes me so proud.”

However, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the action, accusing Trump of misleading the country. “Donald Trump promised to bring peace to the Middle East. He has failed to deliver on that promise. The risk of war has now dramatically increased, and I pray for the safety of our troops in the region who have been put in harm’s way,” Jeffries said in a statement.

The US maintains a significant military presence in the region, with between 40,000 and 50,000 troops now on high alert.

Israel’s Defence Ministry has further elevated its state of alert, cancelling all “educational activities, gatherings and workplaces, except for essential sectors.”

Trump’s decision follows more than a week of reported Israeli strikes on Iran, aimed at dismantling the country’s air defenses, military capabilities, and damaging its nuclear enrichment facilities.

The White House and Pentagon have not yet elaborated on the specific types of bombs used in the operation, despite confirming the use of B-2 bombers. Euronews reported that the US has been shifting its military aircraft towards the Middle East in recent days. While Trump initially suggested a decision on striking Iran would take “two weeks,” the action was taken within around two days.

The international community is bracing for the potential ramifications of this dramatic escalation, with concerns mounting about the potential for a wider regional conflict. The coming days will prove critical in determining whether diplomatic efforts can defuse the situation or if the Middle East is on the brink of a devastating war.
